Hyperhydrosis treatment can greatly decrease overactive sweat glands in order to improve a person’s quality of life. If you are concerned about excess sweating, treatments are available to help you regain confidence and comfort. At Begone Skin and Body, we use minimally invasive methods and adjust our approach based on each person’s needs and condition.

What is hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis or ‘excessive sweating’ is a medical condition that causes a person to sweat excessively. It can affect the whole body or just certain areas, usually affecting hands, feet and/or armpits. For people with this condition, sweating may occur regardless of heat or exercise. This can be embarrassing, especially in social settings. It may even cause them to rethink their normal daily activities or limit what they feel they can safely wear.

Excessive sweating occurs when the nerves trigger the sweat glands to become overactive. The exact cause of the condition is unknown. However, potential triggers can include:

  • Genetics
  • Sensitivity to certain odours or foods
  • Heat and humidity
  • Hot flashes due to menopause
  • Conditions such as diabetes or thyroid problems

Many people allow this condition to negatively impact their lifestyle for years, not realising there are remedies to stop it. Treatment options for this condition allow people to enjoy life without the worry of embarrassment caused by excessive sweating.

How does hyperhidrosis treatment work?

If excess sweating has started to impact your routines and daily life, you may be suitable for clinical treatment by our experienced clinicians at Begone Skin and Body. We offer two excellent hyperhidrosis treatment methods, including iontophoresis and neurotoxin injectables.

Iontophoresis has been used to successfully treat excess palmoplantar (hands and feet) and armpit sweating since the 1940s. It involves placing the affected area(s) into a solution. This may include substances such as water, a saline solution or, on occasion, a specific medication to assist the process. It works by directing a mild current through the skin of the affected areas which effectively neutralises the connection between nerves and the sweat glands.

Following a consultation with our in-clinic doctor, you may undergo your first treatment. It is a quick treatment that is non-invasive with minimal side effects.

Neurotoxin injection treatment

Other hyperhidrosis treatments are available for more severe cases, such as injectable procedures. Injectables are a commonly used and trusted treatment method that provides long-lasting relief from excess sweating.

This treatment is very effective in treating excessive sweating, particularly in the armpit area. It involves multiple small injections of a neurotoxin to the affected area in order to block the nerve signal responsible for sweating. It is an ideal treatment, since it only affects the area that is injected. It is relatively pain-free and we do offer the use of a strong numbing cream should you wish to use it. The procedure doesn’t take very long and begins to work in about three to five days or so.

The results are usually extremely impressive and can last between eight to 12 months.

What happens during your consultation?

A consultation at Begone Skin and Body is required in order to discuss your condition and plan a treatment approach that is right for you. During this private meeting, we may discuss your general health and the potential causes of your condition. This will help us understand your needs in order to advise the best path for hyperhidrosis treatment.

Whether you are having iontophoresis or injectable treatment, we will discuss the number of treatments needed and instructions for how to get the most out of the procedure. You are welcome to ask any questions about your hyperhidrosis treatment and gain further clarification. This way, you can be fully aware and prepared for what to expect. Our trained and friendly clinical staff will aim to provide you with the best quality guidance and care.

What to expect

Once we have discussed your needs during your consultation, you will know what to expect on the day of your treatment. The exact methods will depend on the severity of your condition, goals, and personal preferences.

Iontophoresis Treatments
This treatment option involves soaking your hands in a water or saline solution. A device is used to pass an electrical current through the water, blocking the nerves that produce sweat. In order to achieve the best results, you will need to soak the affected area for 20 to 40 minutes, two to three times each week. This non-invasive hyperhidrosis treatment leads to improved symptoms over time.

Neurotoxin Injectable Treatments
Depending on your treatment plan, neurotoxin injections may be the best option to treat your condition. Your clinician will target specific areas, injecting a small amount of the substance beneath your affected skin. The injections inhibit the nerves that trigger your sweat glands, effectively reducing your tendency to sweat in that area.

We provide high-quality, clinically proven treatments in order to help patients get relief from excessive sweating. Most people find an improvement soon after the first treatment. However, sometimes repeat treatments can be required to get the optimum result.

Aftercare and risks

Our skilled clinicians at Begone Skin and Body will speak to you about the risks prior to your treatment, as well as how you can minimise issues and achieve a great result. After your treatment, there is a risk that you may not see the results you desire straight away and may require further appointments. For some patients, there can also be a risk of skin irritation, muscle weakness, skin dryness, or infection.

Patients can return home straight after their procedure. In the first few days after hyperhidrosis treatment, we may instruct you to avoid exercise, hot baths, and irritating skin products. Exercise should also be avoided after injectable treatments. If you notice any worrisome symptoms or prolonged side effects, contact the clinic and we will offer further clinical advice.
