Advice on Body Art from Department of Health

Body art continues to be a popular choice of personal expression among all ages of people. Careful consideration about the type of tattoo or piercing you want to have done is needed because there are risks to your body and health when having any kind of procedure like this performed.

Beware

Cheap is not necessarily the best when it comes to choosing a tattoo artist. With the saying ‘you get what you pay for’ running true, avoiding non-professionals is a great way of trying to minimise the risk of scarring, nerve damage or infections.

Body Art Advice

Make sure you are prepared before the procedure by avoiding alcohol for at least 24 hours, testing out a stencilled design of the tattoo before you have it permanently inked and being as healthy as possible when it is done to help with the healing process.

Don’t Forget

Check that the tattoo artist or piercer uses sterilised equipment, washes their hands and wears gloves during the procedure. They must clean your skin thoroughly before any work is done and only use needles and piercing equipment once before being thrown away.
