Warning About Medical Tourism From AMA WA

Want a holiday with a face-lift on the side? The Australian Medical Association (WA) is warning Australians against taking up the latest fad of travelling to South East Asia for medical treatment or surgery.

Medical Tourism Numbers Growing

With reports giving the number of Australians seeking treatment overseas in the tens of thousands, the AMA WA is concerned that Australians are taking unnecessary risks to both their health and their financial well-being.

Follow Ups Are An Issue

While countries such as Thailand do have some well qualified and experienced surgeons, there are minimal systems in place for patient follow ups and treatment after a procedure.

Be Sure To Think About All Aspects

Australian surgeons and hospitals are then picking up the cost of fixing some botched operations and complications such as infections, which unfortunately the taxpayer has to pay for. Warning that you get what you pay for, the AMA WA is recommending that individuals think carefully and discuss their thoughts with their local GP before signing up for any overseas procedure.
